Neapco and Elaphe Propulsion Collaborate for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles Powertrain Solution

Neapco Inc., a Tier 1 automotive supplier in the U.S., has partnered with European Elaphe Propulsion Technologies, a pioneer in next-generation electric vehicles, to create an innovative electric powertrain solution for electric and hybrid vehicles, named SuperBear. The powertrain utilizes patented bearing and e-motor technology to achieve the maximum torque in a small configuration, delivering 150 Nm/L or equivalent to 4250 Nm per cubic inch.

The solution liberates space usually occupied by drivetrain components, as the e-motors provide torque to each wheel independently, entirely within the wheel well. The vehicle e-powertrain architecture enables customization to meet drivers’ daily requirements without altering the chassis platform configuration and suspension arrangement.

The SuperBear powertrain is advantageous for both Hybrid and EV native platforms, offering distinct benefits for different electric vehicle applications. The integration of all motor components into the wheels decreases the vehicle’s weight, hence enhancing its range and facilitating the incorporation of larger batteries or increased payload capacity. The compact system in delivery and transport vehicles facilitates unprecedented flexibility in vehicle design, enabling use-case-specific features such as low floors for effortless cargo loading, adjustable rooflines, and enhanced space for passengers and cargo, significantly improving driver ergonomics.

The SuperBear system has two wheel-hub electric motors, a hydraulic pump, and an air-cooled oil reservoir with integrated control electronics. The electrified axle can be installed as either front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive in vehicles equipped with a standard 16-inch commercial-grade rim, serving as an original OE build to facilitate a genuine skateboard design or as a bolt-on retrofit requiring minimal to no chassis modifications and without altering the axle concept.
