What is an Isolated DC-DC Converter?

Isolated DC-DC Converter separates the input from the output by electrically and physically dividing the circuit into two sections and hence preventing direct current flow between the input and output. This galvanic isolation is achieved through electromagnetic fields using transformers or coupled inductors and signals cross the isolation using signal transformers or optoisolators.

Every isolated DC-DC Converter has an isolation voltage. Isolation voltage refers to the maximum continuous voltage that can be applied across the isolation without causing breakdown.
