What are Metal Composite Inductors?
Metal composite inductor is a type of power inductor that consist of coils integrally molded with magnetic powder. The magnetic powder forms the magnetic core of the inductor and is made up of Fe-based metal composite powdered materials such as Fe-Si-Cr or amorphous.
Key features of metal composite inductor:
- Provides stable inductance over a wide temperature range
- Offers slow saturation characteristics (i.e., inductance drops softly above rated current) and can handle high current
- Provides high saturation characteristics that allow high tolerance against current transients
- Better inrush current capability
- Good efficiency
- Low DCR
- Low I2R loss
- Low acoustic noise
Metal composite inductors are ideal for use in automotive SMPS (switched-mode power supplies), LED headlights, instrument cluster panels, head-up displays (HUD), electric oil pumps (EOP), electric water pumps (EWP), electric power steering (EPS), DC-DC converters, PCs & servers, points of loads (POL), FPGA, battery-powered regulators, LCD-TV, HDD, amusement equipment, wireless chargers, notebook computers, and tablet terminals.
