What is a Current Limit Switch?
A current limit switch functions by limiting the current to protect the power supplies in case of a short circuit or other overload condition. It consist of a current comparator that compares the load current (via current mirror circuit) with the reference current limit. When the overload or short circuit condition occurs, the load current exceeds the reference current limit. The current comparator then provides an output signal and sends it to the gate driver circuit. The reference current limit can be set by the designer by an external resistor.
Key features of Current Limit Switch:
- Precision current limit
- Ensure output short protection and overload protection
- Current limit adjustable
- Thermal protection
- Under-voltage lockout
- Reverse current protection
Current limit switch ICs are ideal for use in consumer appliances, PC, laptops, TVs, portable media players, data modem cards, cell phones, battery, supercapacitor modules, LED drivers, power management ICs, and automotive applications.
