What is a Buck-Boost Transformer?
Buck-Boost Transformer is a single phase transformer that is used to reduce (buck) or increase (boost) line voltage by 5 to 20%. This transformer consists of two primary windings and two secondary windings (a total of four windings) for adjusting the supply voltage and operates on the same working principle as that of a regular transformer.
Key features of Buck-Boost Transformers:
- Low cost
- Compact size & lightweight
- High efficiency
- 5-10 times increase in kVA
Limitations of Buck-Boost Transformers:
- No circuit isolation
- No neutral connection
- Does not support open delta network
Buck-Boost transformers are ideal for use in applications including AC motor loads, resistive heating loads, commercial & industrial air-conditioning system, UPS, incandescent lighting or low voltage lighting, and telecommunication.
