What is a Center Tap Transformer?
Center Tap Transformer is a type of transformer transformer that consists of a center tap (a contact wire) at the middle point of the secondary winding. The middle point of the secondary winding acts as a neutral to both the outer tap. This allows the transformer to provide two output voltages with the same magnitude but opposite polarity (i.e., two output voltages 180o out phase with each other).
Center tap transformer operates on the same principle as that of a normal transformer. But they both differ in their output voltage. The regular transformer provides only one secondary output voltage, whereas the center tap transformer provides two output voltage levels with the same magnitude and opposite polarity.
Center tap transformers are ideal for use in electronics rectifier circuits, inverter circuits, microcontrollers, analog telecommunication systems, and battery charger designs.
