What is a Metal Oxide Varistor?
Metal oxide varistor (MOV) is a non-linear & bidirectional varistor that is used to protect the electronic device/circuit from high voltage spikes such as lightning, (electrostatic discharge), EFT (electrical fast transient), inductive load switching, etc. It changes its resistance when an input voltage is applied to it. These varistors are ideal for use in transistors, diodes, triacs, consumer electronics, industrial electronics, gas and petroleum appliances, relay, and electromagnetic valve surge absorption applications.

When the electronic device to be protected is subjected to high voltage transients, the MOV starts to conduct and suppress the incoming overvoltage surges to a safe level that can be handled by the electronic device. The MOV suppresses this overvoltage transients by partially absorbing and partially conducting the surge energy. After surge energy suppression, the MOV returns to a high resistance state (i.e., initial state).
Key features of Metal Oxide Varistors
- High current handling capacity
- It has high energy absorption capability
- Fast response times to protect against high voltage surges up to rated limits
- It is available in wide operating voltages
