What is a Multilayer Varistor?
Multilayer Varistor (MLV) is a voltage dependent, non-linear, and bidirectional varistor that is used for protection from high voltage transients such as ESD (electrostatic discharge), EFT (electrical fast transient), inductive load switching transients, etc. These varistors are ideal for automotive, power supply, consumer electronics, industrial, and portable electronics applications.

When a nominal input voltage is applied to the MLV, it offers high resistance characteristics. When an electronic device to be protected is exposed to high voltage transients, the MLV starts to conduct. It offers low resistance and thus clamp the incoming overvoltage surges to a safe level that can be handled by the electronic device. The multilayer varistor exhibits a sharp symmetrical breakdown characteristic and provides excellent protection from damage caused by high voltage transients.
