What is a DIAC?
A DIAC or Diode for Alternating Current is a specialized type of diode that is designed to conduct electric current in both directions when certain voltage thresholds are met. It is a two-terminal electronic component that is particularly used in AC circuits.
The DIAC is often used as a triggering device in electronic circuits, specifically in devices that require precise control of triggering points. It is commonly used in conjunction with other components, such as thyristors and triacs, to control the flow of alternating current.
The DIAC has a characteristic behavior known as "negative resistance," which means that its resistance decreases as the voltage across it increases. This unique property allows the DIAC to switch on and conduct current once the voltage across it reaches a specific threshold, known as the "breakover voltage." Once the breakover voltage is reached, the DIAC conducts in both directions until the current drops below a certain level.
The DIAC is ideal for use as the triggering device motor/light dimmer/heat control oscillator circuits, and start-up triggering in lighting ballast for CFL, TL, or LED lamp applications.
