What is a Current Transducer?

A current transducer, also known as a current sensor or current transformer, is a device that measures and converts an electrical current in a circuit into a proportional output signal that can be easily measured and processed. It is commonly used in various applications to monitor and control current levels.

The primary function of a current transducer is to provide an isolated and accurate measurement of current without directly interrupting the circuit being measured. It ensures electrical safety and allows for easy integration with monitoring systems or control devices.

A current transducer typically consists of a magnetic core, a primary winding, and a secondary winding. The primary winding is connected in series with the circuit carrying the current to be measured. The magnetic core serves to concentrate the magnetic field generated by the current, and the secondary winding is used to sense and produce an output signal proportional to the primary current.

The output signal of a current transducer is usually in the form of a voltage or current that is proportional to the measured current. This output can be easily processed and utilized for monitoring, control, or feedback purposes in various applications, including power systems, industrial machinery, motor control, energy management systems, and electrical safety systems.

Hall effect is the phenomenon where a voltage is generated perpendicular to both the direction of current flow and an applied magnetic field. In closed-loop Hall Effect transducers, the Hall effect sensor is placed in proximity to the magnetic field generated by the current to be measured.

There are different types of current transducers available, including:

  • Closed-loop Hall Effect Transducers: They are also known as closed-loop Hall effect current sensors, are devices that utilize the Hall Effect principle to measure electrical current accurately. These transducers consist of a Hall Effect sensor, a magnetic core, and a feedback mechanism. Closed-loop transducers provide accurate and linear output signals.
  • Open-loop Hall Effect Transducers: These operate similarly to closed-loop Hall effect transducers but without a feedback mechanism. They provide a non-linear output signal and are suitable for applications where high accuracy is not critical.
  • Rogowski Coil Transducers: Rogowski coils are flexible and lightweight current transducers that consist of an air-core coil. They are suitable for measuring high-frequency currents and offer advantages in terms of size, installation, and cost.
  • Current Transformer Transducers: Current transformers (CTs) are widely used current transducers that employ the principle of magnetic induction. They consist of a magnetic core and windings, where the primary winding carries the current to be measured, and the secondary winding provides an isolated output.
