What are e-Fuses (Electronic Fuses)?
e-Fuses, or electronic fuses, are active circuit protection devices designed to safeguard power systems from overcurrent, overvoltage, and short-circuit conditions. Unlike traditional fuses that rely on thermal or mechanical interruption, e-Fuses use semiconductor switching elements such as MOSFETs combined with control circuitry to monitor and regulate current flow in real time. When a fault condition is detected, the device limits or disconnects the load in a controlled manner, preventing damage to downstream components and maintaining system integrity.
These devices integrate sensing, control, and protection mechanisms into a compact solution, enabling precise fault response and repeatable operation without the need for replacement after a trip event. e-Fuses are widely used in power distribution networks, hot-swap applications, and sensitive electronic systems where fast response time, programmable thresholds, and diagnostic feedback are critical. Their ability to control inrush current, enforce current limits, and provide voltage clamping enhances system reliability and ensures stable operation under varying load conditions.
Key Specifications
- Input Voltage: Defines the allowable voltage range that can be applied at the input of the e-Fuse. This parameter determines compatibility with the upstream power source and ensures the internal control and switching circuitry operate within safe electrical limits.
- Output Voltage: Represents the regulated or passed-through voltage delivered to the load under normal operating conditions. It reflects the voltage seen by downstream components and is influenced by the internal switch resistance and control behavior.
- Clamping Voltage: Indicates the maximum voltage level that the e-Fuse will allow at its output during overvoltage or transient conditions. This parameter is critical for protecting sensitive loads by limiting voltage excursions to a controlled threshold.
- Output Current: Specifies the maximum continuous or limited current that the e-Fuse can supply to the load. It determines the device’s current handling capability and defines the threshold at which current limiting or shutdown mechanisms are activated.
The Largest Database of e-Fuses
everything PE has listed e-Fuses from the leading manufacturers and made them searchable by specification. You can enter the key parameters and the search tool will scan catalogs from the leading manufacturers to identify products that meet your spec. Once you find e-Fuses that meet your requirement, you can view product information, download datasheets or request quotations. Quotation requests will be routed to the manufacturer of the product who will get back to you directly. The quotation will also be routed to distributors of the product in your region.
