What are Electric Vehicle (EV) Technology?
Electric Vehicles (EVs) are powered fully or partly by electricity stored in batteries, using one or more electric motors instead of, or in addition to a conventional gasoline engine. Different types of EV's includes -
- Battery EVs - It runs only on electricity stored in batteries, charged from an external source, and have no gasoline engine.
- Plug-in Hybrid EVs - It uses both an electric motor powered by batteries that can be charged and a gasoline engine, allowing to drive on either power source.
- Hybrid EVs - `It combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motors. The battery is charged by the engine or braking, not by plugging in.
- Fuel Cell EVs - It generates electricity from hydrogen using fuel cell to power the electric motor, with water vapor as the only exhaust.
Different components used in electric vehicles are -
1. Electric Axles - E-Axle is a fully integrated drive system used in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid vehicles. It combines multiple powertrain components into a single compact unit, including electric motor, inverter, and transmission or reduction gearbox.
2. Electric Vehicle Batteries - EV batteries are rechargeable energy storage systems used to power electric vehicles. They store electrical energy and supply it to the electric motor, enabling the vehicle to move without using fossil fuels. Unlike conventional lead-acid starter batteries used in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, EV batteries are high-capacity, high-voltage battery packs designed to deliver substantial energy over long durations.
3. EV ECUs - EV electronic control units are embedded computing systems that control, monitor, and manage the various electronic and electrical subsystems of an electric vehicle. Each ECU is dedicated to a specific function that ranges from motor control and battery management to infotainment and safety features.
4. EV Fuses - They are protective electrical components used in electric vehicles to prevent damage from overcurrent, short circuits, or system faults. Fuses are designed to interrupt high-voltage and high-current circuits in the event of abnormal conditions, safeguarding critical EV components like the battery, inverter, motor, and charger.
5. EV Traction Motors - EV traction motors are the main electric motors that propel an electric vehicle. They convert electrical energy from the battery into mechanical energy (torque), which drives the wheels and moves the vehicle forward or backward.
6. On-Board Chargers - OBCs are critical electronic systems in electric vehicles that convert AC (alternating current) power from a wall socket or public charging station into DC (direct current) power that can charge the vehicle’s battery.
