Power-added efficiency (PAE) is a metric for evaluating a power amplifier's efficiency that takes the amplifier's gain into account. PAE will be pretty comparable to efficiency when the amplifier's gain is high enough. The amount of power needed to drive the amplifier's input should be taken into account when calculating the amplifier's efficiency, but, if the amplifier gain is relatively low.
