What are EV Charging Meters?

EV charging meters are electrical measurement devices designed to quantify electrical energy transfer within electric vehicle charging systems. They operate by sensing electrical quantities at defined points in the charging circuit and converting those quantities into measured energy values. Their function is to provide deterministic measurement of electrical parameters under controlled charging conditions without altering the power flow.

The internal operation of EV charging meters is based on continuous acquisition of voltage and current signals, followed by signal conditioning and numerical processing. Measured values are combined according to the selected measurement method to calculate electrical power and accumulated energy. The meter outputs this information through defined interfaces using supported communication protocols.

AC Charging Meters

AC charging meters are EV charging meters intended for alternating current charging architectures. They measure time-varying voltage and current waveforms and derive electrical power from the instantaneous relationship between these signals. Energy measurement is obtained by integrating power over time under AC operating conditions. Their operation depends on synchronized sampling of voltage and current channels, phase relationship detection, and internal computation aligned with the configured measurement method. The meter performance is bounded by its rated voltage, rated current, and operational voltage parameters, which define valid operating limits for accurate measurement.

DC Charging Meters

DC charging meters are EV charging meters designed for direct current charging systems. They measure unidirectional voltage and current supplied to the vehicle and calculate power as the product of these measured quantities. Energy is determined by integrating DC power over the charging duration. Internally, DC charging meters rely on stable voltage sensing and current measurement elements optimized for continuous current flow. The rated voltage and rated current define the electrical limits, while the measurement method determines how raw signals are processed into power and energy values.

Configuration

Single phase EV charging meters are configured to measure electrical parameters on one phase conductor. They calculate power and energy using voltage and current measurements from a single phase path according to the selected measurement method.

Three phase EV charging meters are configured to measure electrical parameters across three phase conductors. They compute total power and energy by combining measurements from each phase channel based on the internal phase aggregation logic defined by the meter design.

Electrical Ratings and Power Measurement

Operational voltage defines the voltage range within which the EV charging meter can function as intended. Rated voltage specifies the nominal voltage level used as a reference for measurement accuracy and internal scaling.

Rated current defines the maximum continuous current that the meter can measure without exceeding its designed limits. Power is derived from measured voltage and current values and is accumulated over time to determine energy, subject to the constraints of the rated electrical parameters.

Accuracy Class and Measurement Method

Accuracy class defines the permissible measurement deviation of the EV charging meter under specified operating conditions. It is determined by the precision of sensing elements, signal processing, and internal computation.

The measurement method defines how voltage and current signals are acquired, processed, and mathematically combined to produce power and energy values. This method governs sampling behavior, calculation logic, and integration processes within the meter.

Communication Protocol and Interface

Communication protocols define how measured data is formatted and transmitted from the EV charging meter to external systems. These protocols determine data structure, transmission timing, and interoperability with connected equipment.

The interface specifies the physical or logical connection through which communication occurs. It provides access to measured parameters, configuration data, and operational status without influencing the electrical measurement path.

Protection Grade

Protection grade defines the level of environmental and mechanical protection provided by the EV charging meter enclosure. It specifies the meter’s resistance to external factors that could affect internal measurement components or electrical integrity. This protection ensures that measurement accuracy and operational stability are maintained under the conditions permitted by the defined protection grade.
