CUF helps to evaluate the real-world performance of a power plant. A higher CUF means the plant is generating more energy relative to its installed capacity. In solar and wind power plants, CUF depends heavily on sunlight availability, wind speed, weather, location, equipment efficiency, downtime, and maintenance. Solar power plants usually have lower CUF than thermal plants because solar panels generate power only when sunlight is available. 

Capacity Utilization Factor, or CUF, shows the percentage of actual energy generated compared to the maximum possible energy the plant could have generated if it operated at full rated capacity continuously.

Example:

For a 1 MW solar power plant generating 1500 MWh in one year,

The maximum possible generation = 1 MW x 8760 hours = 8760 MWh

So, CUF = (1500/8760) X 100 = 17.12%
