ST and Würth Elektronik to Host Online Seminar on Power Converters with GaN Technology

STMicroelectronics and Würth Elektronik are hosting an online seminar on power converters with GaN on Tuesday, January 25th, 2022 from 10:00 - 11:30 AM CET. This seminar will highlight the benefits of using GaN in power converters and its impact on magnetics.

Thanks to their intrinsic characteristics, wide bandgap materials offer reduced power losses and can operate at very high frequencies. The most recent GaN technology can reach high frequencies with low losses. It can significantly reduce the size of the onboard magnetics and eliminate or reduce the heatsink. As a result, the end application is smaller and more efficient.

Attendees will have an opportunity to discover the benefits of GaN in power converters, with a special focus on LLC resonant converters. They will also get to know more about the impact of GaN switches in transformer design. Attendees only require Italian & basic English (only for Q&A) languages and basic knowledge of power converter topologies as prerequisites to attend the seminar.

Speakers at the seminar include Ester Spitale, Technical Marketing Manager at STMicroelectronics and Angelo Strati, Field Application Engineer at Würth Elektronik.

Key agenda on the seminar:

At 10:00 AM CET, the session will start with STMicroelectronics:

  • Overview of the power features of GaN that make it ideal to work at very high frequencies with low losses.
  • GaN in some power converters topologies (ACF, LLC, totem-pole PFC), with a focus on LLC resonant converters.

At 10:40 AM CET, Würth Elektronik will explain:

  • How to select the correct transformer in power conversion application.
  • Transformers for LLC resonant converters with GaN.

11:20 - 11:30 AM CET: Question & Answers
