DIN and DKE Releases New Standard for Battery Passport

In a landmark move to support the transition to low-carbon mobility and renewable energy, DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) and DKE (Deutsche Kommission Elektrotechnik Elektronik Informationstechnik), the official standardization organizations in Germany, have released the DIN DKE SPEC 99100 standard, titled “Requirements for Data Attributes of the Battery Passport,” This specification defines the data attributes required for implementing the battery passport in compliance with the EU Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542).

The European Union has implemented the EU Battery, a comprehensive framework focusing on the safety, sustainability, and lifecycle management of batteries. The regulation officially came into force on August 17, 2023, and aims to foster a sustainable and responsible circular economy. The Union aims to introduce a "battery passport", a digital tool designed to document and exchange critical data across the entire battery value chain. This innovative approach ensures transparency in material sourcing, promotes sustainable production practices, and streamlines second-life and end-of-life battery management processes.

The DIN DKE SPEC 99100 provides organizations a framework for implementing the digital battery passport. It specifies the necessary data attributes to be included, aligning with the mandatory requirements of the EU Battery Regulation while allowing for the inclusion of optional additional information. These data attributes may include, but are not limited to:

  • General information about the battery and its manufacturer
  • Details about the materials and composition of the battery
  • Performance metrics and durability characteristics
  • Conditions surrounding raw material extraction, including labor practices and environmental impact
  • Data on the battery’s carbon footprint

This specification ensures a standardized approach to creating transparent and comprehensive battery passports.
