Kinetic Technologies Unveils Advanced USB 48 V EPR Protection IC

Kinetic Technologies is expanding its USB Data Line Protection portfolio with the introduction of KTU1133, a single-chip, highly integrated solution for USB 48V EPR Type-C Power Delivery (PD), which significantly reduces both solution cost and size. KTU1133 integrates the industry’s first automatic VBUS level shift circuit and external blocking NFET gate driver, allowing SPR-rated PD controllers to safely operate in EPR systems.

Erik Ogren, Senior Director of Marketing at Kinetic Technologies, says, “The KTU1133 Safety Manager is an advanced 48V EPR device representing a major new milestone, allowing OEM products to deliver and receive more than 100W. However, this brings new technical challenges to solve when protecting those higher voltage USB ports.  This next-generation product is designed with upgraded performance to meet the IEC standard for surge protection as well as having the fastest Over Voltage Protection response times, providing a higher level of protection.

The CC1/2 switches have low on-resistance for passing VCONN power up to 1.25A. During dead battery conditions, optional-use internal 5.1kohms resistors automatically pull down on CC1/2 to ensure that the up-stream source provides 5V on VBUS. Key applications for the new KTU1133 include Mobile Workstations and Gaming Notebooks / PCs, Docking Stations, Conference Systems, Monitors, Tools, E-Bikes, Battery Power Stations, and any device with USB Type-C Port up to EPR 48V/5A, 240W.
