Socomec Unveils Advanced Modular BESS Platform for Scalable Energy Storage

Socomec, a global leader in low-voltage power management and energy performance solutions, has announced the launch of its next-generation Energy Storage Modular Systems (ESS), a highly flexible and intelligent Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) platform designed to make renewable energy integration, grid stability, and energy independence a practical reality for industries, utilities, and commercial facilities worldwide.

With over a century of expertise in power conversion and control technologies, Socomec’s new modular ESS reflects the company’s vision to empower the energy transition through scalable, digitally enabled storage solutions that balance performance, efficiency, and sustainability.

A Fully Modular and Scalable Energy Platform

Socomec’s modular ESS is built on a scalable architecture that can grow from a few hundred kilowatts to multi-megawatt configurations, enabling customized deployment for diverse applications from commercial buildings and data centers to renewable energy plants and electric vehicle charging hubs.

The platform comprises three core elements:

Power Conversion System (PCS):

The bidirectional converter enables both AC/DC and DC/AC conversion, allowing energy to be efficiently stored or released as needed. With ratings from 50 kVA to 1.5 MVA and the ability to parallel multiple units up to 20 MVA, the PCS provides robust, grid-compliant power conversion for any scale of operation.

Battery Cabinets:

Available in 200 kWh and 400 kWh modules, the battery cabinets integrate advanced lithium-ion technology with intelligent Battery Management Systems (BMS). These systems ensure optimal thermal control, safety, and long-term performance. The modular design makes it easy to scale up energy capacity to match growing demand or evolving operational requirements.

Energy Management System (EMS):

The EMS serves as the digital brain of the system. It continuously monitors real-time parameters such as current, voltage, temperature, and state of charge. Using advanced algorithms, the EMS optimizes charge and discharge cycles, coordinates with renewable generation, and ensures seamless communication with grid and facility control systems.

Together, these components create a fully integrated BESS that offers flexibility, reliability, and intelligence, key pillars for sustainable energy management.

How Socomec’s BESS Works

Socomec’s Battery Energy Storage System functions as both a buffer and a bridge between energy generation, consumption, and the grid.

  • Energy Capture: The system stores excess energy from renewable sources like solar or wind when generation exceeds demand.
  • Energy Utilization: During peak load or grid constraints, the stored energy is discharged to power the facility or stabilize the grid.
  • Bidirectional Power Flow: The BESS can feed energy back into the grid when required, providing ancillary services like frequency regulation or voltage support.
  • Continuous Optimization: Through its EMS, the system dynamically adjusts performance to maximize efficiency, extend battery life, and reduce overall energy costs.

By decoupling generation and consumption, Socomec’s BESS allows users to maximize renewable self-consumption, mitigate demand charges, and maintain operations during power outages.

Key Applications and Benefits of Socomec’s BESS

  • Peak Shaving: Reduce demand peaks by releasing stored energy during high-tariff periods.
  • Renewable Integration: Smooth out solar and wind fluctuations for consistent, predictable power.
  • Backup Power: Ensure uninterrupted operation of critical facilities such as hospitals, data centers, and manufacturing units.
  • Grid Support: Contribute to frequency regulation and voltage control to maintain grid stability.
  • EV Charging Support: Manage load and enable fast-charging capabilities in e-mobility infrastructure.

The modular nature of Socomec’s ESS also simplifies installation, scalability, and maintenance, allowing organizations to start small and expand as energy needs evolve.

Socomec’s modular ESS is built for adaptability, supporting both on-grid and off-grid applications and ensuring compliance with international safety and performance standards. The company’s integrated approach integrates design, software, and lifecycle support, ensuring long-term reliability and efficiency for its customers.
