Swift Solar is advancing the next generation of photovoltaic (PV) technology with perovskite-silicon and all-perovskite tandem solar cells designed to surpass conventional silicon panels in efficiency, cost, and application versatility. Swift Solar’s perovskite semiconductors are a class of materials that absorb sunlight and convert it to electricity with minimal energy loss. By stacking perovskite layers atop (or alongside) conventional silicon or other perovskite layers (“tandem cells”), the company unlocks more of the solar spectrum than single-junction cells ever could, yielding a substantial efficiency boost.
Swift Solar’s tandem modules can deliver up to 50% higher power output per area compared with standard silicon-only solar modules, while also reducing manufacturing costs by up to 30%. Swift Solar offers major strides on the real-world challenges of scale, stability and manufacturability:
- The perovskite cells show improved stability, with no measurable degradation after thousands of hours under high-temperature stress, pointing toward practical lifetimes of 25 years or more.
- The company has developed high-throughput deposition and manufacturing methods, increasing deposition speed over tenfold compared to conventional processes, which helps drive down production costs and supports large-scale deployment.
- Because perovskites require less material and energy to produce, and lend themselves to thin, lightweight, even flexible formats, the technology opens up new applications, from traditional rooftops and utility-scale plants to solar-powered vehicles, satellites, industrial sites, and even space-based solar arrays.
This combination of high efficiency, lower cost, durability, and flexibility positions Swift Solar’s perovskite-tandem modules as a strong candidate for “Solar 3.0”, the next generation of photovoltaics that could dramatically accelerate renewable adoption worldwide.
Swift Solar recently closed a US$27 million Series A funding round, part of a broader US-backed push to revitalize domestic solar manufacturing. The company is preparing a manufacturing facility in the United States, aiming to deliver high-performance perovskite modules at scale, a significant step toward mainstreaming perovskite-tandem solar. In addition, Swift Solar has announced pilots with industry partners to deploy its technology in real-world settings, including utility-scale solar plants and infrastructure-critical applications.
