Chroma ATE advances in electric vehicle (EV) testing by delivering a suite of highly configurable, precision-driven test systems tailored to the demanding power, safety, and performance requirements of electrified automotive architectures. Designed to support development, validation, production, and safety certification workflows, these solutions address the complete range of EV powertrain and energy storage testing needs.
Chroma offers a modular ecosystem of Automated Test Systems (ATS) that enable scalable evaluation of critical EV components. This includes testbeds for on-board chargers (OBC), DC-DC converters, power electronics modules, and battery management systems (BMS). By combining configurable hardware such as AC/DC power supplies, regenerative electronic loads, power analyzers, oscilloscopes, and digital/analog I/O, with customizable software test frameworks, engineers can execute electrical, functional, and communication tests in a unified environment. Pre-written test sequences and user-defined test scripts, integrated within Chroma’s software, support automated data logging and statistical reporting to improve throughput and design insight.
Key test categories include:
Power Electronic Component ATS – High-fidelity HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) testbeds such as the Model 8610, 8620, and 8630 enable dynamic simulation of real-world conditions for battery packs, OBC/DC-DC converters, and BMS units. These systems simulate fault injection, verify state-of-charge (SoC) and state-of-health (SoH) behaviors, calibrate protection mechanisms, and facilitate functional safety validation according to ISO 26262-aligned methodologies. CAN, CAN-FD, LIN, and RS-485 communication interfaces allow seamless interaction with embedded control systems.
EV Charging Compatibility ATS – Chroma’s Model 8000 platforms support a broad spectrum of global charging standards, including SAE J1772, GB/T, IEC, DIN, CHAdeMO, NACS, and emerging protocols. These systems simulate both EV supply equipment (EVSE) and vehicle responses to verify interoperability, grid interaction, and compliance with AC/DC charging requirements. Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) testing, aligned with SAE J2954 and GB/T 38775, further enables evaluation of emerging EV wireless charging technologies.
Battery Simulator and Test Systems – Regenerative battery simulators and test systems (models 17020, 17020C, 17040, 17040E) provide precise control and measurement of charge/discharge cycles, bidirectional current transitions, and high-power operation (up to multi-MW class). Regenerative architectures recycle energy back to the grid or system channels, reducing test energy costs while maintaining high-accuracy voltage and current measurement essential for module and pack validation. Equally critical for production and qualification testing, reliability test systems deliver fast transient response and high channel density for parallelized test scenarios.
Electric Propulsion Test Systems – Recognizing the complexity of EV powertrain validation, Chroma ATE integrates performance test systems such as the 1220 E-Axle and 1210 E-Propulsion platforms. These systems support Power HIL testing of electric motors, motor drivers, gear transmissions, and integrated 3-in-1 systems, delivering controlled torque, speed, and power conditioning up to hundreds of kilowatts. These capabilities allow manufacturers to perform comprehensive dynamometer and durability tests prior to vehicle integration.
Power Electronics Test Instruments – Supporting the above testbeds are Chroma’s precision DC electronic loads, bidirectional DC power supplies, and programmable AC/DC sources that enable flexible simulation of battery, PV, and fuel cell sources. With high power ratings, customizable waveform definitions, and advanced control interfaces, these instruments are critical for replicating real-world dynamic conditions in lab and production environments.
By interweaving automated hardware and software tools, Chroma’s EV test solutions empower automotive OEMs and tier suppliers to accelerate development cycles, ensure compliance with evolving standards, and validate system robustness under realistic electrical and environmental stressors.
