Climeworks Pushes Direct Air Capture Technology Toward Industrial-Scale Carbon Removal

Climeworks, a global leader in engineered carbon removal solutions, is at the forefront of direct air capture (DAC) technology. The company has advanced the technical and practical capabilities of capturing carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere, a critical component of high-integrity climate mitigation strategies. DAC is an engineered process that extracts CO2 from ambient air using modular equipment and solid-sorbent adsorption, providing a means of permanently removing greenhouse gas emissions that cannot be eliminated through decarbonization alone.

Climeworks’ DAC technology operates by actively drawing ambient air into collectors where COmolecules are selectively adsorbed onto engineered solid sorbent materials. Once the sorbent reaches saturation, a controlled low-temperature heat cycle, typically around 100 °C, regenerates the sorbent and releases a concentrated stream of CO2. This desorption step is energy-efficient relative to high-temperature processes and benefits from integration with renewable or low-grade thermal energy, enhancing both capture efficiency and sustainability.

Climeworks’ technology is structured around modular, stackable units that allow deployment at varying scales with minimal land footprint, enabling scalable design and incremental capacity growth. This modular approach facilitates standardization, simplified manufacturing, and replication in diverse geographic locations where low-carbon energy sources are available.

A distinguishing feature of Climeworks’ DAC systems is the ability to integrate direct air capture with geological storage (DAC+S), where the captured CO2 is permanently sequestered deep underground. This approach employs mineralization techniques, such as those developed with storage partners like Carbfix in Iceland, whereby COreacts with basaltic rock formations to form stable carbonate minerals. This pathway ensures permanent removal of CO2 from the carbon cycle, providing durable climate benefits.

In addition to innovations in hardware and process engineering, Climeworks continuously advances its technology through materials development and system integration. Research and testing of novel structured adsorbents and optimized process configurations have demonstrated significant improvements in energy use and capture performance, validating next-generation DAC designs under real-world conditions. These advancements reduce energy intensity and drive down overall cost per ton of CO2 removed, a key milestone for scaling DAC commercially and broadening market adoption.
