Charm Industrial Scales Bio-Oil Carbon Removal Technology

Charm Industrial, a leader in engineered carbon dioxide removal (CDR), is advancing in its bio-oil carbon removal technology that convert waste biomass into a long-duration carbon reservoir. Leveraging fast pyrolysis and deep geological sequestration, Charm’s solution offers a scientifically rigorous, scalable, and durable removal pathway to permanently extract atmospheric carbon and lock it underground, aligning with global climate mitigation goals.

Charm’s bio-oil carbon removal process begins with the collection of biomass feedstocks such as agricultural residues, forestry waste, and other low-value lignocellulosic materials that would otherwise decompose or be burned, emitting CO2 and other greenhouse gases. These feedstocks are processed through fast pyrolysis, a thermochemical conversion technique conducted at elevated temperatures in an oxygen-limited environment, which thermally deconstructs biomass into a carbon-dense liquid bio-oil. This bio-oil exhibits high carbon content with low energy potential and is resistant to biological degradation, properties that make it particularly well-suited for long-term storage.

Once produced, the bio-oil is transported and injected into deep, geologically stable subsurface formations using existing Class II or Class VI injection well infrastructure regulated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). At depth, under appropriate temperature and pressure conditions, the bio-oil undergoes auto-polymerization and solidifies, creating a permanent carbon reservoir that effectively prevents the carbon from re-entering the atmosphere. This sequestration mechanism conforms to rigorous permanence criteria, offering a durable carbon removal pathway supported by well-characterized subsurface engineering principles.

Complementing the bio-oil stream, Charm’s process also produces biochar, a solid carbonaceous by-product that can be applied to soils to enhance soil health, increase nutrient retention, and provide additional long-term carbon storage in terrestrial ecosystems. The dual-output architecture increases the total carbon removed per unit of biomass processed and delivers co-benefits for agricultural productivity and land management.

To ensure the integrity and traceability of carbon removal outcomes, Charm applies advanced measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) frameworks integrating real-time monitoring, process instrumentation, and lifecycle carbon accounting. These MRV protocols quantify key performance metrics across the biomass feedstock supply chain, pyrolysis conversion, material transport, injection operations, and long-term subsurface behavior, supporting third-party validation and transparent reporting to buyers, standards bodies, and regulatory entities.

Charm continues to innovate on the operational and engineering front with mobile pyrolyzer deployment strategies that enable modular, geographically distributed processing closer to biomass sources, reducing logistical emissions and costs. This deployment model enhances scalability and supports broader industrial adoption of carbon removal services across diverse regional value chains.
