Vestas Strengthens Onshore Wind Performance with Modular Turbine Platform

Vestas Wind Systems advances onshore wind technology with its EnVentus™ turbine platform, a modular and scalable architecture engineered to deliver higher annual energy production (AEP), enhanced grid compliance, and improved lifecycle efficiency across a wide range of wind conditions. The EnVentus platform reflects Vestas’ strategy of combining standardised, proven subsystems with site-specific optimisation, enabling cost-effective deployment in global onshore markets.

Modular Engineering for Site-Optimised Energy Yield

The EnVentus™ platform is built around a modular design philosophy, allowing multiple turbine configurations to be assembled using shared core components such as drivetrains, converters, control systems, and towers. This approach enables Vestas to tailor rotor diameters, rated power levels, and hub heights to match site-specific wind regimes, grid requirements, and logistical constraints, while maintaining manufacturing efficiency and operational reliability.

EnVentus turbines employ a full-scale power converter architecture, enabling decoupling between the generator and the grid. This ensures precise control of active and reactive power, fault ride-through capability, and compliance with evolving grid codes, an increasingly critical requirement as renewable penetration rises.

Advanced Drivetrain and Power Conversion Technology

The platform integrates a permanent magnet generator (PMG) paired with a medium-speed drivetrain, striking a balance between mechanical robustness and electrical efficiency. Compared to conventional high-speed designs, this configuration reduces gearbox stages, lowers mechanical losses, and improves reliability, while avoiding the size and cost penalties associated with direct-drive systems.

Coupled with advanced control algorithms and high-efficiency converters, the EnVentus electrical system maximises energy capture across partial-load and rated-power operation, particularly in low-to-medium wind environments.

High-Capacity Turbine Variants for Diverse Wind Conditions

The EnVentus portfolio includes multiple turbine variants optimised for different site classes:

V172-7.2 MW™: Designed primarily for low-wind sites, this turbine features a large rotor diameter and flexible power ratings (6.5 MW to 7.2 MW), delivering significant gains in AEP while maintaining acoustic performance and load control.

V162-6.2 MW™: Engineered for both low- and high-wind regions, this model supports pad-constrained installations while offering strong performance improvements over previous-generation turbines.

V150-6.0 MW™: Targeted at medium-to-high wind conditions, this variant leverages aerodynamic blade design and optimised control strategies to increase power output and reduce cost of energy.

Across the range, EnVentus turbines incorporate advanced aeroelastic blade designs, intelligent pitch and yaw control, and digital monitoring systems to manage loads, reduce wear, and extend service intervals.

Grid Integration, Sustainability, and Lifecycle Performance

The EnVentus platform is designed to support modern grid needs, including voltage regulation, frequency support, and fast dynamic response, helping stabilise power systems with high shares of variable renewable energy. The full-scale converter also enables future-ready functionality, supporting evolving grid codes and hybrid renewable installations.

EnVentus turbines demonstrate short energy payback times and low lifecycle CO2 emissions per kilowatt-hour generated. The platform aligns with Vestas’ broader sustainability roadmap, emphasising material efficiency, recyclability, and reduced environmental impact throughout the turbine lifecycle.

Since its introduction, the EnVentus platform has achieved multi-gigawatt deployment across more than 20 countries, with strong adoption in markets such as Europe, Latin America, Australia, and Asia-Pacific. The platform’s adaptability to diverse wind regimes and regulatory frameworks has positioned it as a cornerstone of Vestas’ onshore wind portfolio.
