ABLIC Unveils High-Reliability ICs for Modern On-Board Chargers

As electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) become mainstream, the demand for compact, efficient, and reliable on-board chargers (OBCs) keeps rising. ABLIC, a leading analog semiconductor company, has unveiled a finely-tailored suite of ICs designed specifically for OBC applications, enabling robust AC-to-DC conversion, high voltage gate drive, sensing, regulation and system supervision.

Highlights of ABLIC’s OBC IC Portfolio

Gate-drive support via high-voltage LDOs: ABLIC’s LDO regulators (e.g. series S-19212 and S-19213) are designed to power gate-driver circuits for Si IGBTs or SiC MOSFETs used in OBC power stages. The S-19213, for instance, accepts up to 36 V input and provides up to 30 V output with regulated voltage and built-in protection, suitable for MOSFET/IGBT gate supply.

Efficient switching-regulator control: The company’s switching-regulator/flyback-controller IC (e.g. S-19990) is optimized for low-quiescent operation, enabling efficient HV-to-logic or auxiliary DC-DC conversion inside the charger.

Precision sensing and system monitoring: ABLIC’s high-accuracy operational amplifiers (e.g. S-19630A, S-19611A) support accurate current sensing for PFC (power-factor correction) or DC-link regulation, while their watchdog timers and voltage-detectors deliver low-power supervisory functions for microcontrollers and safety logic.

Modern OBC systems typically combine high-voltage power conversion (AC-DC), high-frequency switching, and tight control logic, demanding precise gate-drive voltages, efficient power regulation, accurate current sensing, and reliable supervision. ABLIC’s modular IC portfolio addresses these needs, helping designers reduce component count, minimize losses, improve thermal performance, and meet automotive reliability standards.

Additionally, by using high-withstand voltage ICs for gate-drive and system-logic power rails, OBCs can integrate both Si and SiC power devices, enabling lower switching losses and higher overall charger efficiency.
