Dana TM4, a division of Dana Incorporated, continues to strengthen its position in the global e-Mobility market by advancing integrated propulsion systems that power commercial electric and hybrid vehicles. With decades of research and development in electric motor and inverter technologies, Dana TM4 is enabling manufacturers to electrify everything from urban buses to off-highway equipment. Its innovations in electric axles, traction motors, and control systems reflect a commitment to power density, thermal efficiency, and drivetrain scalability for high-performance EV applications.
Technology and Innovation

Dana TM4's technology foundation lies in high-voltage electric motor systems, inverters, and integrated drivetrain modules engineered for performance and durability. The company leverages over 30 years of R&D and more than 75 patents to deliver propulsion solutions that meet the rigorous demands of both on-road and off-highway applications.
Key to its innovation is the SUMO platforms, which combine permanent magnet synchronous motors with compact, modular inverters and intelligent controls. These propulsion systems incorporate modular motor-inverter configurations, support ASIL-D functional safety compliance, and enable high-speed switching for optimized control efficiency. Their scalable architecture allows OEMs to electrify a broad range of vehicle types using common hardware, reducing complexity and accelerating time to market.
Products and Services

Dana TM4 offers a broad portfolio of EV propulsion products tailored for commercial vehicles, specialty off-road equipment, and heavy-duty applications. Its primary offerings include electric axles and EV traction motors engineered for torque, reliability, and operational flexibility.
Dana TM4’s eS4500r electric axle is a fully integrated propulsion unit combining motor, inverter, gearbox, and a rigid axle in an open differential configuration. Designed for light commercial trucks, SUVs, and small buses, the eS4500r delivers a peak output of 180 kW and up to 4500 Nm of torque. Its compact architecture supports high-speed applications up to 14,000 rpm, offering OEMs a turnkey solution for high-efficiency electrification without major design changes. With configurations available in M180 and M190 differential sizes, the e-Axle is ideal for modular vehicle architectures.
The SUMO MD MV2500-6P traction motor is part of Dana TM4’s automotive-qualified motor-inverter systems and is optimized for use in Classes 4 to 7 commercial vehicles. Featuring a permanent magnet rotor topology, the system delivers a peak power output of 230 kW, continuous torque of 1140 Nm, and speeds of up to 3000 rpm. It includes Dana’s proprietary Reflex switching technology and low-noise, low-cogging characteristics that reduce NVH and improve efficiency. Rated to IP6K9K, it is built to withstand the rigors of commercial and off-highway use.
Recent Development
In October 2024, Dana TM4 introduced the TM4 LVI400, a low-voltage inverter system targeted at off-highway electric vehicles and compact equipment. Built with in-house power modules, a tri-core ASIL-D certified processor, and a custom RTOS, the LVI400 delivers high energy efficiency and robust control in a small form factor. The plug-and-play motor control design allows it to support both synchronous and asynchronous motors, making it adaptable across various low-voltage EV platforms. The launch of the LVI400 reinforces Dana’s focus on reliability, thermal management, and functional safety in rugged operating environments.
Dana TM4 continues to evolve its product platforms with a focus on higher voltage architectures, more compact e-drive units, and software-optimized thermal management systems. The company is investing in modular inverter platforms that can be scaled across multiple vehicle classes, as well as high-efficiency integrated axles that reduce drivetrain mass and increase payload capacity.
Looking ahead, Dana TM4 aims to support next-gen commercial EV platforms through enhanced torque density motors, smart diagnostics, and over-the-air update capabilities for control systems. As EV adoption expands into heavier vehicle classes and off-road sectors, Dana TM4 is positioning its technologies to meet the growing demand for efficient, compact, and ruggedized electrification solutions.
