The LEOPOL1 from STMicroelectronics is a Radiation-Hardened Buck/Step-Down Converter that converts an input voltage of 3-12 V to an output voltage of 0.8-10.2 V. This converter delivers up to 7 A at ground level and supports up to 5 A operation in radiative environments up to 62 MeV·cm²/mg. It features a programmable switching frequency between 100 kHz and 1 MHz and an intrinsic radiation hardness optimized to meet the radiation hardness required for Low Earth Orbit space crafts. This converter is designed using BCD Silicon-on-Insulator technology and is housed in a PowerSO-36 package that provides a slug-down pad allowing a very low thermal resistance of less than 2 °C/W.
The LEOPOL1 offers protection features such as dual-level overcurrent protection, overtemperature shutdown, under-voltage lockout, and output overvoltage protection. It also supports soft-start and soft-start delay configurations for controlled power-up sequencing. This AEC-Q100-qualified DC-DC converter is available in a surface mount package that measures 16 x 14.50 mm and is ideal for power management in satellites for Low Earth Orbit (LEO); FPGA, MPU, ASIC, and MCU power supply.
