The A4915 from Allegro MicroSystems is a MOSFET Driver IC that has been designed for controlling 3-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motors. It requires an input voltage of 5-50 V and an input current of 12 mA. This motor driver IC uses a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal (center-aligned feature available) as an input to provide current-based control operation of BLDC motors. It is capable of delivering high current to efficiently drive the gates of all 6 N-channel power MOSFETs. It includes a bootstrap capacitor that generates a supply voltage greater than the source voltage of the high-side MOSFET, which is required for all the N-channel MOSFETs.
This MOSFET driver is equipped with a synchronous rectification circuitry that offers the necessary control mechanism to improve the power dissipation of external MOSFETs during PWM operation. It also consists of latched thermal shutdown, dead time protection, and under-voltage lockout circuits to prevent undesirable faulty events. This motor driver does not require special power sequencing, thereby simplifying the design. It is available in a surface-mount package (with exposed thermal pad) that measures 5 x 5 mm. This driver is ideal for battery-powered applications.
